Location
Situated in the north-west Himalayas, Shimla is the capital of
Himachal Pradesh.
About the city
Shimla is scenic destination that lies amidst the lap of nature,
surrounded by pine and deodar trees. Being the capital city of
Himachal Pradesh, Shimla offers many panoramic views. Shimla derives
its name from Shayamala, an incarnation of Goddess Kali, the deity
of power and wrath. Located in the southern parts of North India,
Shimla is a heavenly retreat for the tourists and also provide a
convenient base for adventure sports.
History
Shimla derives its name from Shayamla, which is another name for
Goddess Kali. Shimla came into light when the Britishers discovered
it in 1819. Till then it was a part of the Nepalese kingdom. Soon
after the British came to this place many Europeans star.
In 1864 Shimla was declared as the summer capital of India. After
Independence Shimla was the capital of Punjab and was later named
the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
Tourist Attractions in Shimla
The Mall
This area forms the centre of attractions of the town. The small
zonal area encompasses a scandal point, a large open square with a
view of the town. A walk through this place will add a lot of charm
on your tour.
Himachal State Museums
This museum showcases a good array ancient historical sculptures,
paintings, coins, photos and other items from all over the state and
outside and is located 2.5 kms West of Scandal points. It also
houses a library with lot many historical books and manuscripts.
Tara Devi Temple
Perched on the top of the hill, Tara Devi temple houses Lord Shiva
as the deity. The temple lies 11 kms from Shimla and is dedicated to
Tara Devi, a Hindu version of the Tibetan Goddess Drolma.
Jakhu Temple
Situated at an altitude of 2455 mts, Jakhu Temple is dedicated to
monkey god, Hanuman. The temple is located at such a place from
where it offers a panoramic view to the surrounding valleys.
Chadwick Falls
It is a 67 metre high fall and is 7 kms from Shimla. The Falls can
be approached through summer hill.
The Glen
This is one of the popular tourist zone surrounded by thickly
wooded ravine at 1830 altitude.
