Kedarnath
Location:
Situated in Uttar Kashi district of Uttranchal, is very close to
Indo-Chinese border. Mandakini is the main river here and the place
is located 3583 m above the sea level in Gharwal Himalayas
About:
The majestic Hindu shrine, Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It
is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams in India and is one of the Char
Dhams observed by Hindus. The temple here was established in 8th
century AD and stands very close the temple of Pandavas.
The legend has it that Pandavas wanted to seek forgiveness from
Shiva for killing hundreds during war of Mahabharata. In order to
elude from them, Shiva hide himself in the form of a bull at
Kedarnath. Bhima (one of the brother among Pandavas), recognized the
deity and tried caught him. Shiva dived into the ground and left his
hump behind, which is the main idol of worship here.
Standing amidst of scenic Kedarnath Ranges is visited by hordes of
Hindu Devotees. The shrine is open from May- October and is the best
time to visit Kedar Nath.
Tourist Attractions in Kedarnath
Kedarnath Temple: The 8th century temple is dedicated to
Lord Shiva. Vasuki Tal:A crystal clear lake with awesome scenic
surroundings.
Son Prayag : 20 kms from Kedarnath, Son Prayag is located at
the confluence of the Mandakini and the Sone-Ganga. This quaint
little village is known for its picturesque beauty.
Gaurikund : Ancient temple dedicated to the Goddess Gauri or
Parvati and it houses the metallic idols of Gauri and Shiva is a
must visit place.
Ukhimath: Ukhimath is the winter home of the deity of Kedarnath
temple.
Bhairav Nath Temple: The temple of God Bhairav, the deity who
guards the Kedarnath Temple in winter, when it is closed due to
severe winter conditions.
Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya: Located behind the Kedarnath
Temple is the Samadhi or the final resting place where the saint
gave up his life.
