Common Wealth Games

About Common Wealth :
A multi-sporting event held every four years, it is an amalgam of Commonwealth of Nations which were earlier colonies of the British. Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 member countries and is headed by Queen Elizabeth II. This does not imply political power over these nations but means only a symbolic stellar.

All these games are funded and financed by the Queen. Fist ever Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 and were called British Empire Games. Its name was changed to Commonwealth Games in 1978. Among the sports played here, the games include some sports which are played mainly in Commonwealth countries.

Origin :
After suggestion of Reverend Astley in 1981 for such a festival, Festival of Empira was held in 1911 in London to celebrate the coronation of King George V. Australia, Canada, South Africa and United Kingdom participated in these games.

After a round of debate and discussion, in 1930, Canada organized first British Empire Games. Since these games gained popularity, other commonwealth nations showed interest in participation. The games grew epically from then. Commonwealth Games Federation now stands as a 53 member association.

Delhi & Commonwealth :
Commonwealth Games this time are going to held in Delhi in 2010. India is the third developing nation to hold Commonwealth Games after Jamaica in 1996 and Malaysia in 1998. This is the second time, this event will take place in Asia.

For Delhi, it is the biggest sporting event ever held here but the city has an experience of holding Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The shape of the city is being changed, new sporting complexes are under construction and event managers are keeping a track of accommodation facilities available and the anticipated number of visitors.

Ad campaigns for the games have been released and the Chief Minister of Delhi has already invited whole world to this city full of life. All are set, putting best of their efforts to make Delhi 2010 a grand success.
